Learn more about the various rug fibers and construction techniques to give you the confidence that comes with a well-considered purchase.

Natural Fibers

Natural fiber rugs made from animal or plant materials are more eco-friendly than synthetic materials. They also tend to better resist stains and fading. These biodegradable materials include cotton, wool, juice, silk, and leather. On the downside, natural rugs are more expensive and may require more maintenance to keep them looking great.

Natural rug fibers include the following:

  • Wool rugs: This soft, insulating material is still one of the most popular fibers for rugs. Wool rugs are durable, making them suitable for high-traffic areas, and wool is easy to tuft or weave for different style effects.
  • Cotton rugs: Cotton is lightweight and easy to keep clean. If you're going for a bohemian look, consider flat-woven or hand-braided cotton rugs.
  • Silk rugs: This luxurious natural fiber has a smooth, shiny texture. Skilled artisans hand knot the threads of fancy silk rugs for bedroom and dining room areas. Although delicate, they maintain their beauty when placed in low-traffic areas.
  • Jute, sisal, and bamboo rugs: Plant materials exude a farmhouse or exotic vibe. These materials add rustic texture to hand- or machine-woven carpets.

Synthetic Fibers

Synthetic fiber rugs are derived from petroleum or other chemicals. These rugs are affordable, resist moisture and maintain their color well. However, theyre also less eco-friendly than natural materials and more prone to shedding.

Synthetic rug fibers include the following:

  • Nylon rugs: This is the most durable synthetic fiber for rugs. It's suitable for varying construction methods, including woven and tufted rugs for your home. Choose carpets with high nylon content for high-traffic areas such as hallways and living rooms.
  • Polyester rugs: Fade- and stain-resistant, this soft material is widely used in clothing and other materials. When used as part of a multi-fiber rug, its durable and beautiful at different pile heights.
  • Acrylic rugs: If you want the look and feel of silk without the high cost, consider acrylic rugs. Typically woven by machine or handmade, acrylic rugs are best used in low-traffic areas such as dining rooms.
  • Olefin rugs: Olefin is a synthetic fiber that is water-resistant, stain-resistant, and fade-resistant. These carpets work well outdoors in sunlit spaces.
  • Viscose rugs: Viscose mimics the look and feel of silk and you can choose from hand-tufted or hand-knotted construction styles.
