Tips on Protecting Your Wool Rug

When a wool rug is cared for regularly, it will last for many, many years. Many can last for well over 100 years. One fortunate feature of wool rugs is that they are very dirt and abrasion resistant. So with a regular cleaning schedule, they are not difficult to maintain. These are a few tips to help you care for your wool rug:

Spills and Stains

Spills do occasionally happen. Pets can also mistake the soft rug for grass and go to the bathroom where they shouldn’t. Knowing that accidents can happen, it’s important to take care of them before they become stains. While wool is naturally repellent to moisture, spills if untreated can become lasting stains.

When spills occur, fast action is needed. Remove any surface particles or debris. The next step is to gently dampen the affected area with a mixture of half water and half white vinegar. Finally, blot the area with a white cotton rag or towel to remove any moisture.

Excessive Wear

Over time, dust and debris can make your rug appear worn down. This is the accumulation of years of microscopic particles finding their way into the rug. Walking on the rug just pushes the dirt deeper into the fibers. Regular vacuuming is the way to prevent this. Be sure to vacuum with the fiber grain from one end to the other. This suction will remove dirt and dust. Making this a regular cleaning routine will extend the longevity of your pieces like the Surya area rugs.

The Appearance of White Knots

As wool rugs age, small white spots may appear. These are knots that are part of the weaving process known as warps and wefts. They can become visible with wear and aging. There are several solutions. Simply accept them. See if they can be pushed to the back or touched up with dye.
