In the past thirty years Safavieh has come a long way from an artisan family business to a high tech corporation with very sophisticated operations in terms of manufacturing and distribution. We’ve grown from one showroom on Madison Avenue to become an international player with half a million square feet of warehouse space and our own manufacturing facilities on three continents. We now drop-ship thousands of packages daily to end-use customers on behalf of our retailers in all 50 states, plus Canada, South America, Europe and Asia.
Within the home furnishings industry, Safavieh is most successful in combining the best of high tech and high touch. We’ve always been considered the authority on fine quality, craftsmanship and style. We’ve kept that focus as we grew our logistics and warehousing capabilities, leading to strong partnerships with the largest retailers in the country. We serve every channel of distribution, from big box stores to multi-unit chains with the right products and price points to build their businesses.
Safavieh is probably the oldest rug company in continuous operation and among the most recognized brands in the interior furnishings.
Our Mission:
For four generations, the family behind the Safavieh brand has dedicated its talents and resources to providing uncompromising quality in area rugs. We believe there is no equal to the durability, beauty and artistry of handmade rugs and well-crafted furniture. We focus our research and development on creating the highest quality consumers can buy within a broad range of budgets.
Our mission is to perpetuate these crafts – to lead with innovation while preserving centuries-old traditions in all categories: from antique reproductions, transitional area and accent rugs, to the most fashion-forward and contemporary designs.
Our Background:
Since Safavieh’s inception in 1914, consumer education has been our core philosophy. Informed customers and our commitment to quality have helped us become the world’s finest weaver of luxury rugs. That commitment has been rewarded with numerous industry accolades and recognition by America’s top designers and architects in a survey by House & Garden as the Designers’ Best 2007 for antique and reproduction rugs.
Safavieh began as a supplier of antique Oriental rugs to leading interior designers. We continue to curate one of the country’s finest collections of antique rugs from the great weaving centers of the world, and to work with notable style leaders in this country. As a result, our archives are limitless.
We study fabric, color and lifestyle trends two to three years before developing a new collection in our New York design studios. Cycles often begin in the fashion world before filtering to products for the home, so we look for trends in couture clothing patterns and colors as well.
Safavieh creates its designer-quality rugs in the major rug weaving centers of the world: Persia, India, Tibet, Nepal, China and Pakistan. We have the unique ability to produce each Safavieh rug in the region best-suited to each particular design. Although our artisans are scattered far and wide, they are all equally talented. But each country, city and village has its own time-honored techniques and special look – qualities we incorporate into our designs.
Most Safavieh collections are hand-knotted using ancient techniques the weavers’ ancestors have used for thousands of years. We also employ hand-tufting techniques for some Safavieh collections.
Safavieh Now:
Based in the United States since 1978, Safavieh combines rug and home furnishings showrooms with a varied wholesale business, supplied by its own production lines from the classical rug making centers of the world. The company is headquartered in Port Washington, New York. Its flagship showroom is located at 153 Madison Avenue in New York City.
Safavieh began its licensing program in 2006 with Thomas O’Brien, a longtime customer whose taste we always admired. In 2007, we successfully introduced a highly anticipated Martha Stewart Rugs collection. In 2009 we introduced Safavieh Couture, a licensing program with renowned designers including Jamie Drake, David Easton, Suzanne Kasler and Thom Filicia. The uniqueness and beauty of Safavieh’s own programmed collections were acknowledged with the America’s Magnificent Carpets Awards, and our unparalleled service has been recognized with awards such as the 2005 Home Decorators Collection Vendor of the Year.
